Work '07 MAR-JUL with the Sao Tomean Coast Guard

On assignment in Africa for a U.S. Navy project, we're equipping the Coast Guard of São Tomé for maritime surveillance.

We landed in Africa for the first time with a challenging technical task ahead.  None of us had heard of the country before;  São Tomé & Principe is a small island country in the Gulf of Guinea, west of Gabon and Angola.  The first trips were particularly difficult with little time for looking around or appreciating the place.

By July, we'd gotten a bit of a feel for the country and culture.  The local folks we were working with became our friends.  Hard work alongside good people makes friendship easy, and they were glad to coach us in their culture and language.   Pictures (right) are early shots from various locations; not a lot of fun yet.
